Assateague Island National Seashore

Once we were finished having so much fun on the rides at Ocean City, we headed over to Assateague Island National Seashore to check out the wild ponies. It was only a short drive south from the main highway so it made for a short drive before our long trip back home. We really wanted to see the swimming of the ponies from Assateague to Chincoteague but we are about 4 weeks too early and will be gone before they do it. Boo. We still had fun.

We started our tour off in the Visitor's Center where the kids worked on becoming Junior Forrest Rangers. They had to complete items in their books and explore the exhibits, including a touch tank, before taking an oath and receiving their badges.

Taking their Oath!
We then headed out to explore the island and find some wild ponies.

If you squint you can see about 4 wild ponies out by the water.

My Jr. Park Rangers informed us that these people were NOT the recommended bus-lengths distance away from the horses.

Nature hike.

After a long, hot day, we headed back over the Chesapeake Bay towards Virginia.

We made it back in time for dinner and managed to be in the car while avoiding this:

Unfortunately, after we got everyone to bed and everything put away, a HUGE storm came through around 11pm and knocked our power out. We ended up being without power (AC, Refrigeration) for 3 more days with temperatures in the 100s with the heat index. More to come on our adventures during the power outage so be on the look out.
