Biking Ko Kret

My new friend V took me to Koh Kret Island today where most of the local pottery is made. This island was created when the Thais dug a canal as a shortcut around a large curve in the Chao Phraya river. Several other shortcuts were built down stream also. The island became a refuge for the Mon tribes. You can read more about that here.

We left early and were at the island before it got too hot and humid. We paid 5 baht ($0.16) to ride a ferry boat across the Chao Phraya river.

We rented bikes to explore the island, and it only cost 40baht ($1.30). It took us about an hour to go all the way around. We went about half way around a second time to check out some of the shops we passed on the first trip. One of the locals recognized us from our 1st time around and commented. She was cute. We did notice on our second trip that most of the route was covered in water. I figured, the tide was coming in, although most of the rest of the island was slightly flooded. I didn't get a picture but you could visibly see the water marks from where the river flooded inland last year. Fingers crossed it doesn't get any higher this year.

So here are the rest of my pics from today. Enjoy.

The Golden Buddha from the island.

Our tour guide through Wat Chimlu
Buddha statue that we added gold leaf to on our way into the Wat.

We were looking for a particular store that my friend keeps trying to visit, but they always seem to be closed. We asked around and ended up finding the guy below in the process of making pottery. This guy sells his own stuff, doesn't send anything to the middle man. His craftsmanship is so much better than the other things you see in the tourist shops. But his prices were much more. You get what you pay for though. V talked to him for a while in Thai and we learned that he teaches also and would be willing to have our cub scouts come out for a lesson. How awesome would that be?! Here is some of his work. The black color is achieved by adding carbon to the clay before shaping.
