Ellie, Danny, and Benny are all going to receive 1st Communion this year at church. They have been attending CCD every Monday in preparation and had their 1st Reconciliation on December 10th. Although I don't think they really understand or know what 1st Communion is or the significance of it but they are being troopers and enjoying their weekly classes.
Last weekend the church planned a retreat for all of the 1st Communicans and an adult companion. Since Ben is not really into the whole "Church-thing" I asked my parents if they would be willing to drive 5 hours south to attend with the kids and I, and they did. They arrived late Friday night just in time for our 9:30 date with about 80 other students and their companions.
We started out the day making bread together. We mixed the ingredients together just as Mary and Jesus did as a boy.
Then we moved on to a tour of the church where we learned about the different items used during mass. Benny was selected to help hold the lectionary book. He was warned it was heavy but kept saying it wasn't.
When he was finally relieved of his duties we moved on to another activity. We watched a short skit about the "Our Father" prayer and what each line meant and worked on prayer intentions. The kids traced their hands and wrote their intentions on them. These were placed in a special box and will be presented during their 1st Communion Mass in May.
Next stop was candle making. The kids' CCD teachers were in this class and snapped a shot of all of us.
Finally, we made our way back to where we started. Father Kelly gave a short speech then blessed our bread (which was now baked and on the tables in front of us). We now got to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Ellie, of course, didn't want to even try it. As you can see Benny loved it.
Afterwards we enjoyed a nice lunch before heading home. The guys worked on a new shelf in the garage while Grandma and I worked on a huge pot of spaghetti sauce that had been cooking all day. We had a delicious Lasagna dinner with Grandma's sauce.
